Title: Understanding localized plasmons in nanostructured materials
Abstract:
Plasmons in metallic nanostructures are being intensely studied for optical signal processing, biochemical detection, and non-linear optics technologies, among others. We will review in this talk the most salient theoretical methods used to describe plasmons in these instances, including full numerical solution of Maxwell's equations as well as analytical approaches that permit capturing the essential physical ingredients. The following specific examples of application will be
discussed:
(1) optical and electron microscopy studies of nanoparticle plasmons,
(2) single-molecule, single-particle detection, and
(3) optical waveguiding.
